2003 Diary Entries up to August:
Tuesday, August 12, 2003
Up @ 4:45, work-out at the gym for the 1st time in quite a while.
Will probably be sore tomorrow.
Pre-Workout Snack: banana
Breakfast: blueberries with soy milk, banana
Mid-Morning Snack: almonds, another banana
Lunch: turkey, bread
Mid-Afternoon Snack:
Dinner: pasta, sausage, salad
Post-Dinner Snack:
I spoke to Sam Smith today. He is leaving the church due to the recent developments in Minneapolis. He leaves a huge hole. I would think the capital and building campaigns are in jeopardy. Not because of 1 person, but what the rest of the congregation will do when they see Sam and Dani have left. And I am afraid I may be called on to be the new Senior Warden. I don’t want to be the Captain of a sinking ship…. Need to pray about all this.
Fast day yesterday. Went to the Detention Center last night.
Wednesday, August 06, 2003
Ran the 6 mile route in 1:05
Sunday, August 03, 2003
Up @ 4:30. CP for 25 minutes and handling emails and preparing for church services and vestry meeting.
Saturday, August 2, 2003
Ran 10 miles, 1:57. Tired, thirsty and hungry at the end. Walked 1 min. for each 8 minutes of running. Went to Bob and Gia’s in Aliso Viejo for their house warming
Tuesday, July 29, 2003
Didn’t get up early enough to go to gym, did floor exercises and stretching in my office. M still upset and I am too. I told her she would have to do the work on her computer and I didn’t like to be criticized when I was trying to help. Tensions eased during the day.
Decided to eat lightly today. Fruit for b’fast, banana and smoked oysters for lunch, nuts for snacks and salad and tuna shish kabob for dinner. I feel pleasantly full.
M and I talked about a $50K commitment to the building fund. She was surprisingly agreeable.
Had the idea to try some HR recruiting. I have always gotten along with HR folks and I understand their job. Putting some feelers out to HR people in our database.
Monday, July 28, 2003
Fast day. Ran 6 miles, but had to walk several times, legs seemed to be dead and sore. I have not been able to do very much since the marathon.
Not on track for my weight goal, by birthday. Changed it once again to 10/3, 10 weeks away. I don’t know how much I weigh now, probably 205 or so.
Martha got back from w/e in S. Barbara. Told me John wanted some assurances that we were financially OK, said he was concerned. This upset me greatly, since I thought he was prying. But after several hours of thinking about it, I realized what really upset me was the fact that John (or anyone for that matter) was bringing up this issue when I should have been taking care of business myself. And Martha, rightfully so, is concerned about our retirement and financial future. 1st thing I must do is get some term life insurance. Then get to work and make some placements.
Difficult day trying to get Martha’s new laptop set up. As usual, she gives me grief. I wonder why I even bother.
Went to SD Detention Ctr, still pissed off about the row with Martha. However, we had a good session with 4 English speaking guys.
Friday, July 04, 2003
Ran for 1:30 this a.m. with 1 minute walk break every 10 minutes. Other than that, a lazy hot day.
Monday, June 09, 2003
So much for keeping up with my diary….
Rusty and Toy got a Yellow Lab over the w/e, female named JuJuBee… Candy??
Went back to the gym for the 1st time in a couple months.
Monday, June 02, 2003
Up at 4:44. A little stiff with blood blister on right foot. Other than that in good shape. Will try to walk some later today. Would like to consider running another one, perhaps the Phoenix Rock n Roll.
Next challenge: 180 pounds by my birthday. If I can quit drinking and run a marathon, I can do this. No peanut butter (from jar) until I reach that goal.
Pre-Workout Snack: banana
Breakfast: yogurt, strawberries, honey
Mid-Morning Snack:
Lunch:
Mid-Afternoon Snack:

Post-Dinner Snack:

Completed my first marathon. Felt very strong at 12 mile mark. Then had dizziness problems. Figured out it must be from dehydration. I need more water per mile in the last half of race.

Up at 4:30 but didn’t get started on my run until 5:45. Was scheduled to do 22. Very windy. I ran out of time and energy at 12 miles. Called it a day and came in and got to work. I will re-schedule the long run. Don’t have much time until the marathon.
Easter Sunday, April 20
Up at 4:30 and at the new property at 5:30 for the service starting at 6. A little cool but a great service. A few of us sang. There was about 80 people there.
Got home and laid around a bit and we back for 11am service and sang. Mira, John and Dana Wolf got here last night. Toy and Rusty came down about noon. Jen still having her anxiety problems and did not come down. Avery and his friend from Hemet came as well. M did the Easter baskets and I hid eggs with $$$ in them. Had a great meal. Ate way too much. Got to bed about 8:30.

Monday, April 07, 2003

Monday, March 03, 2003
Didn’t get to bed until after 10pm, so I slept in.
Sunday, March 02, 2003
Up @ 4:44 again. Felt good, a little sore in places but overall felt fine after my long run (the longest of my life) yesterday. Did 25 minute CP.
Having computer problems which seem to be Word related. Seems that I had a macro virus. Went to Applications Data (the folder was hidden) and went to templates, renamed normal.dot to normal.old which seemed to fix whatever the problem was…. I hope….
That was not the problem. It was an email that was somehow infected with a macro virus. Every time I tried to respond to it, it hung up and then each word file I opened afterward I could not save. I deleted the email and that should take care of it.
Had coffee and a muffin with Tom and Lucy after church. It is an absolutely beautiful day. All the mountains are covered with snow and it is about 65. After vacuuming/mopping the floor and I went for top-down drive down 79 south. Everything is green and lovely.
Saturday, March 1, 2003
Up at 4:44am refreshed and wide awake. I had planted that idea the night before, and it worked.
Did some office work after morning prayers. Started my run at 7:30, partly sunny/cloudy but very pleasant. Used Martha’s MP3 player which was great. Deliberately started slowly. Felt good and strong the entire run but near the end my right foot hurt a little and the top of my hips hurt. As usual, I found it easier to run than to walk near the end of the run. I picked up the pace on the last loop. Finished the 16 miles is 3:13:51 or 12:04 per mile.
Worked at my desk the rest of the day. Felt like I was fairly productive. Watched a Michael Jordan DVD, read some and was in bed @9:30.
Friday, February 28, 2003
Martha has gone to Congress in Anaheim with Amanda Rines. Left this a.m. at 6 and will be home around 7pm, Sunday night. I am looking forward to being alone (with the cats) and getting tons of stuff done.
Last year this time I would have been planning on drinking tons of stuff and would not have done much of anything constructive. What a difference 8/20/03 makes.
Went to my 1st vestry meeting at St. Thomas. I really feel a calling to work diligently in the church. I hope that this is not being driven by my avoiding the SRA work I want (and need) to do.
Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Broke my fast with fruit, but unfortunately ate a big dinner meal.
Ran the loop in 59:10 after stopping 10 seconds for water and 30 seconds for a walk break. Was at 29:15 at half way point

Up at 4:45, to the gym for first time in a little while.
Fast day.
So-So biz day, holiday and East coast shut down with snow storm, worst in 7 years.
Joe and Diane Lavin came out to visit. Spent a couple hours, had a great time. Joe was on his way to the wineries in Temecula when he had his accident.
Picked up Corrine in Encinitas and drove out to the INS prison to meet with Chaplain Bery. We met with a group of young Chinese women and did some meditation/centering prayer. We had a couple of inmates that spoke English so it went smoothly. I got a lot out of it. I guess I feel a calling.

Monday, January 13, 2003
Up at 5:45am. Ran my 6 mile route in 1:05,
Fast day today.
Sandi sent me an email, she gave her notice for this Friday. Don't know why she would not call, I will call her. Nagging concern is that she will take us to Wage/Hour people for back wages….. I doubt if she would do that, but Tom might push her in that direction.
Sunday,
Attended two services to talk about Long Range Planning and Small Group Ministries. Went to Dave's church to see Amahl and Night Visitors. Very well done, very professional.
Saturday
Ran my 8 miles in 1:36:13. Felt fine.
Spent most of day helping with yard work, trimming, bagging etc.
Thursday, January 09, 2003
Ran my 6 mile route this a.m. in 1:05:10 Not too tiring.
Tuesday, January 07, 2003
Up late, didn't sleep well. Still gusting to 60 mph. Will wait until the wind dies down to go jogging.
Slowly breaking the fast with fruit and soy milk this a.m.
Got late start on morning prayers which put me behind in my work and calls.
Must make it a priority to get up at 4:30 each morning regardless of the sleep I get the night before.
Monday, January 06, 2003
Got up a little late, 4:50. Had trouble focusing on CP. John's car blocked me in, so I did not go workout, thinking I would go later. But I didn't. Heavy winds last night and most of the day today. Fast day, but had couple cups of coffee in the a.m. and two diet cokes in the afternoon. Nothing else but water.
It is 4pm now and I am doing better with my marketing, but not where I want to be. But, it seems to be coming.
Tough going with the fasting, but I made it.
Very windy tonight, had trouble sleeping with all the noise.
Sunday, January 05, 2003
Went for ride with top down after church. Temp in the 70's. Did some work on my marketing plans. John/Mira spent the night coming home from their trip to FL. I ate junk all day long……..
Saturday, January 04, 2003
Up at 4:45am. Went to gym for 1st time in quite a while. I weighed 202 again which was very disappointing and depressing. I must attribute it to the Holiday eating. Back to my schedule and goal of 185 by 2/28/03.
Drove to Glendora for breakfast and haircut with Jen. Saw Rusty and Toy also,
Came home and did my long run, 7 miles in 1:22:10. Was quite warm and my legs were sore from working out in the a.m. However, I finished it fine but worn out. Did not have much lunch, did not feel like eating. However, the dinner meal was followed by much snacking.
Friday, January 02, 2003

Wednesday, January 01, 2003
To bed at 11:00 last night, everyone else stayed up, but went to be shortly after that. Up at 5:45. Went to gym, but it was closed. I will do some exercises here at the house. Very foggy this a.m., about 35. Spoke to Mom and she seemed to be doing well.
I am feeling very good about this New Year. I am committed to being productive and successful at my work so we can eliminate our debts and buy a house this year. I am confident that I will continue to be a non-drinker; I don't want to go back to the "old days". I have a long way to go spiritually but I am working on it. Physically, I can get stronger and healthier but I am not displeased at where I am. And if I can be a better communicator, all my relationships will be better (for me and them).
Nice, relaxing day at home. Watched some football. Our guests left around 5pm (Dave and Sharon Banning and Sister Barbara)
